Somewhere along the way a lot of us picked up the habit of explaining ourselves. Not just declining the thing, but building a whole case for why, complete with evidence, an apology, and a promise to make it up to them later, all so nobody can accuse us of not having a good enough reason.

This toad has no such problem. He is sitting in the moss with his tea, entirely unbothered, radiating the energy of someone who decided a while ago and does not plan to revisit it. There is no guilt in his face and no follow up text drafted in his head. He simply is not coming, he has made his peace with that, and honestly he looks great doing it.

That is the joke, and it is also the point. A boundary does not need a defense attorney. You are allowed to be busy without proving it, tired without justifying it, and uninterested without softening it into something more palatable. The people who love you will be fine, and the ones who needed a reason were probably not going to accept it anyway.

Somewhere out there is a toad who has never once explained himself and has never lost a minute of sleep over it. Aspire accordingly.
